The Summer Youth Campaign is an initiative that The U.S. Conference of Mayors’ National Dollar Wi$e Campaign is launching to encourage cities to incorporate financial education into their summer youth jobs programs.
This year many cities and their workforce development boards will receive additional funding for summer youth jobs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Dollar Wi$e believes this is an excellent opportunity to teach these youth what is in their first paycheck, encourage them to establish a savings goal, and educate them on how to open a savings or checking account.
Many mayors have already agreed to participate in this initiative, but cities must move quickly as planning for many summer jobs programs has already begun.
We invite you to review the literature below. Included is an overview of the Dollar Wi$e Summer Youth Campaign, recommendations on how to structure a financial education component into your summer jobs orientation sessions, and a sign-up form to participate in this important U.S. Conference of Mayors initiative.
Let’s show the country how summer youth jobs programs can be used to instill responsible financial management, something our country desperately needs.
